RALEIGH, (AP) — The North Carolina Legislature is one step away from passage of a bill that repeals the state's Common Core education standards.

The House is scheduled to vote on the compromise bill Wednesday. The Senate signed off on it last week.

The bill repeals Common Core for the state's K-12 standards and directs the State Board of Education to come up with new ones. A new standards advisory commission would be formed to make recommendations to the board.

Common Core, which schools began testing two years ago, would remain in place until the new standards are completed.

If the House passes the bill, it will go to Gov. Pat McCrory for his signature. McCrory has said he wants to ensure high standards are in place for public schools.
