Governor Pat McCrory is congratulating five North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities for receiving national recognition for academic excellence, student activities, publications, alumni activity and athletics. North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T State University, Fayetteville State University, Shaw University and Saint Augustine's University each received awards during the HBCU Digest Awards held this month.

"North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities are an important part of our state's longstanding commitment to excellence in higher education," said Governor McCrory. "Congratulations to all of the North Carolina schools recognized for their success in and out of the classroom. Their accomplishments make our state proud."

Among the five North Carolina HBCUs recognized, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was named the Historically Black College and University of the Year. In a letter to NCCU Chancellor Debra Saunders-White, Governor McCrory praised NCCU's "prominence among other North Carolina HBCUs and universities as part of our state's longstanding commitment to higher education." The governor also commended "the men and women whose dedication to excellence helped make NCCU a leading institution of higher education."

To build on the success of North Carolina HBCUs, Governor McCrory championed the Connect NC bond. Overwhelmingly approved by voters in March, Connect NC includes $193 million for facilities at five HBCUs including $90 million for an engineering complex at North Carolina A&T State University, $50 million for a sciences building at Winston-Salem State University, $30 million for a school of business building at North Carolina Central University, $13 million for facilities at Elizabeth City State University and $10 million to renovate a science building at Fayetteville State University.
