An experienced educator who has studied the convergence of law, public health, and legislative responses to drug crises will join the Elon Law community this spring as the school’s newest tenure-track faculty member.

Assistant Professor Taleed El-Sabawi will teach property law and other offerings related to her scholarly interests. She has previously led courses in U.S. and international health systems, business law, business ethics, and wills & estates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

“I am truly excited to be joining the faculty and staff at Elon Law,” she said. “I hope to contribute to Elon's commitment to creating an engaging and experiential learning environment, while challenging students to think critically and creatively in defining legal and policy problems – and in proposing solutions. In me, students will find an enthusiastic mentor and teacher and a passionate scholar.”

El-Sabawi earned a Master of Science in Public Health from The Ohio State University and is completing her Ph.D. in Public Health, Health Services Management and Policy. She practiced law in California and Nevada after earning her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law, where she was articles editor of the Texas Journal on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights. El-Sabawi graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

Her research focus is in the areas of mental health and addiction policies, with particular attention to the intersection of drug policy, health law, and legislation, especially legislative responses to the devastating opioid crisis.

“We look forward to Professor El-Sabawi shaping robust conversations and debate in the classroom while inspiring students to consider professional opportunities that can make a positive impact on public policies that will affect future clients,” said Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman. “We are also pleased at her practice experience that will fit neatly with our emphasis on engaged and experiential learning.”
