RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The push for public-private partnerships in the space program took a step forward Friday when NASA announced $1.1 billion in contracts with American firms.

Among the recipients is SpaceX, which received a $440 million contract to develop space transportation vehicles. SpaceX is a star in the private space field, having flown a capsule to the International Space Station earlier this year.

The firm will reportedly work on making the Dragon capable of carrying astronauts.

Boeing was award a $460 million contract while Sierra Nevada Corp. received a $212.5 million contract.

A NASA administrator said the space agency is committed to making space accessible and working with private industry to harnass ideas is a key component of making that happen.
