RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Durham native Loretty Lynch is now Attorney General of the United States, the first black female to hold the post of chief law enforcement officer of the United States. Both of North Carolina's U.S. senators, Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, voted against Lynch's confirmation.

First District Congressman G. K. Butterfield, whose district includes parts of Durham, released the following statement. Butterfield is also chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

---------------------------------------------

“Today is a historic day for our country as Loretta Lynch, a North Carolina native, becomes the first African American female to serve as our nation’s top law enforcement official.  Her experience and qualifications will be of great value as she leads the Justice Department in defending the abiding principles of the U.S. Constitution.

“Ms. Lynch is the choice of President Obama, she is the choice of the Congressional Black Caucus, and she is the best choice for all Americans.

“I applaud today’s confirmation of Loretta Lynch as the next Attorney General of the United States of America.”
