RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - A vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee this week is seen as another step toward reforming how military veterans are compensated in retirement.

A blue ribbon panel earlier this year recommended Congress take 15 actions to change the system and shore it up for future retirees.

The Senate committee voted to, among other things, allow a 20-year retiree to collect 40 percent of base pay rather than 50 percent. They also voted to institute a program whereby service members could contribute some of their own money to a retirement account, with a government match.
