CURRITUCK, (AP) — Currituck County is getting four surplus Humvee military vehicles for its sheriff's deputies.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported the all-terrain, all-purpose vehicles are being donated by the Department of Defense.
The Dare County Sheriff's Office also got two of the vehicles this year.
They are expected to be used for rescues in response to hurricanes and winter storms that hit the Outer Banks, flooding roads. N.C. 12 was impassable in Currituck and Dare counties after Hurricane Irene struck last August.
Officials say normal sheriff's vehicles can make it through about 12 inches of water, while Humvees can make it through about 30 inches of water. One of Currituck's vehicles has a modified intake and muffler systems and can handle water that is nearly 5 feet deep. |
