CARTHAGE, (AP) — The former Carthage police chief and his wife are facing embezzlement charges in separate cases.

Authorities said Wednesday Chris McKenzie is accused of using a town credit card to make personal purchases in 2011. He is also charged with filling his own car with gas from Moore County-owned pumps.

Allison McKenzie is charged with stealing more than $350,000 between 2005 and last year from a local dentist office where she worked.

It wasn't known if the McKenzies have attorneys.

Chris McKenzie was police chief from 2002 until his resignation a year ago. He gained national attention in March 2009 when one of his officers stopped a shooting rampage at a Carthage nursing home where eight patients were killed.
