RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The market for bedroom furniture appears to be booming and North Carolina is poised to play a greater role in supplying the furniture to East Coast residents.

Ashley Furniture has announced it will expand its mid-Atlantic manufacturing and distribution center located in Advance. The expansion will add approximately 550 jobs to the state’s manufacturing economy.

Gov. Pat McCrory was on hand for the celebration last week. The governor noted this major expansion comes less than two years removed from the facility’s groundbreaking.

“Furniture and manufacturing have always been an integral part of North Carolina’s economic history,” said McCrory in a statement. “Ashley Furniture is building upon that tradition and becoming an important contributor to North Carolina’s economic future.”

The company has been producing upholstery on the site since November 2012. Ashley employs roughly 600 workers, about half of which are on the upholstery side.

Also on hand for the Ashley event were U.S Senator Richard Burr, Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Secretary John Skvarla, Mocksville Mayor Francis Slate and Mayor Lynn Rumley of Cooleemee.
