RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) -  Beth Freshwater Smith of Wilson has been selected to fill a vacant district court seat in the 7th District. The district serves Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties. Smith is from Wilson County.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Judge William G. Stewart. Smith will serve the remainder of his term, which runs through December 31.

Smith is currently the Senior Assistant District Attorney for the 7th District, where she has worked as a prosecutor since 1987. She has served as a lead prosecutor in Nash County and has prosecuted felony cases, including capital murder, in Wilson, Nash and Edgecombe Superior Courts.
