RALEIGH, (AP) — North Carolina House Republicans want to talk about how they'll go about creating legislation that would require citizens to show photo identification before voting in person.
House Speaker Thom Tillis and other House leaders scheduled a news conference Tuesday to discuss their plans for voter ID this year.
Tillis and Senate leader Phil Berger have said they want a photo ID requirement approved in 2013. A similar bill two years ago was vetoed by then-Gov. Beverly Perdue. Current Gov. Pat McCrory is a voter ID supporter.
A spokesman for Tillis has said the process will begin with public hearings or committee meetings, followed by legislation. A House Election Committee meeting was scheduled for Wednesday.
Democrats have been largely opposed to such legislation, saying it would erode voting rights.
