RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Upon learning of the resignation of Valerie Macon as the newly appointed Poet Laureate of North Carolina, Susan Kluttz, secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources, released the following statement.

-----------------

"I am saddened by this entire situation. I met with Valerie Macon and was very impressed with her passion to use her talent to combat homelessness. I am sorry that she became the focus of disingenuous comments that she did not deserve. I pledge to her and to all artists, both new and experienced, that this department will do all we can to support their creativity."

"I also feel that Governor McCrory was unfairly targeted. He has been incredibly supportive of this department and the arts. He fully understands and has stated publicly that the arts are fundamental to North Carolina's history and culture."

He is the first Governor who has welcomed the ArtsDay participants to Raleigh, his budget fully funded the North Carolina Arts Council and he appreciates the positive economic impact that arts has on rebuilding our small towns and large cities. I wish Valerie all the best."
