RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - State Board of Elections member Paul Foley has vacated his seat after details came to light that he inserted himself into an investigation that involved a client of his law firm.

The announcement came Thursday from Board of Elections Chairman Josh Howard.

Gov. Pat McCrory had called on Foley to resign.

The case in question involved video sweepstakes and a sweepstakes company owner named Chase Burns. Foley's firm represented Burns. Foley had recused himself but, according to media reports, had asked for information about the investigation.

Nominating a replacement for Foley now falls to North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Hasan Harnett.
