How many vetoes has Gov. Beverly Perdue signed? Will any more face an override in the Republican-controlled legislature?  And what about State Highway Patrol troopers making bad press again? Veteran capital reporters Barry Smith of the Freedom Newspapers in North Carolina and Bruce Ferrell, managing editor of the NC News Network and WPTF News answer these questions with host Barlow Herget in his Weekly News Review. But the biggest political chatter in the capital city this week was about redistricting.  The Republicans have drawn some very different congressional districts that will make it difficult for incumbent Democrats to hold their seats.  Is it politics as usual or politics as unusual?  It's been over 100 years since Republicans have controlled the redistricting process.

Bruce Ferrell, managing editor of WPTF News and the NC News Network, joins host Barlow Herget to review the news such as the political impact of Governor Perdue's veto of the abortion bill approved by the Republican-controlled legislature.  What's left for the Governor to sign, veto or not sign but allow to become law?    Ferrell and Herget also look at why Bank of America stock went UP after the bank's announcement it would pay $8.5 billion to 22 large investors because of the bank's mortgage loan practices. And the US Supreme Court declared illegal an Arizona program to finance political campaigns, a decision that has implications for NC's public financing of election campaigns for the state's appellate judges.

Veteran reporter and editor Bruce Ferrell of WPTF News and the N.C. News Network joins host Barlow Herget to review the week's news. Among the topics: how did the Republican majorities in House and Senate get through the recently adjourned General Assembly in near-record time? And what did they do while they were here? Listen to the list of GOP golden oldies that were adopted such as abortion curbs, cuts to environmental programs, looser gun laws and much, much more. The lawmakers will come back July 13 to complete remapping legislative and congressional districts, some of which already are being called illegal in meeting federal guidelines.  Meanwhile, Superior Court Judge Howard Manning heard testimony on the impact of the new budget on the education of poor children affected by the Leandro lawsuit. The Eugenics Task Force also heard testimony on the state's wrong-headed sterilization program.

Patrick Gannon of the Wilmington Star-News and Josh Ellis of SGRToday.com join host Barlow Herget to review Gov. Beverly Perdue's role as Hamlet in her "to veto or not to veto" drama on the legislative budget bill. The panel also examines why the state cannot compensate victims of its infamous eugenics program. Don't go away, there's more. On John Edwards' refusal to plea bargain.  On the controversial package of bills changing state voting laws.  And, groan, more on groins. Should there be more groins on the coast and who should pay for them? Hear it all on the Weekly News Review.

Will the Republican controlled legislature gets it way on the budget and if so, how will they do it? That question and more are discussed by Jim Morrill of the Charlotte Observer and SGRToday.com's Josh Ellis with host Barlow Herget in the Weekly News Review. The Republicans moved with record-speed, even bypassing the typical conference committee meetings to adopt a $19.7 billion budget bill. They also have successfully persuaded enough Democrats in the House to help them override Governor Perdue's veto should she veto the bill.  Republicans already have a veto-proof Senate. What will this do to Governor Perdue politically?  What special provisions were put in the bill and then taken out? Tune in and find out.
